Barkley taking leave of absence from TNT (AP)

Charles Barkley is taking a leave of absence from the broadcast booth. The announcement by Turner Sports came Friday, hours after police said the 45-year-old former NBA star was legally drunk when he was arrested Dec. 31 on suspicion of drunken driving in Scottsdale, Ariz. Test results show Barkley had a blood-alcohol level at .149, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 in Arizona.



Cavaliers eager for rematch with Celtics (AP)

It will feel like June in January. The Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers meet Friday night in a rematch of last year's playoff series and a possible preview of this year's postseason.

As little LeBron James Jr. practiced writing his name on the dry-erase board in Cleveland's locker room, his famous father was busy a few feet away. The Boston Celtics were on the flatscreen TV and LeBron James was watching them, studying them, breaking them down. Stepping away from his work, the youngster examined his penmanship.



If Miles finds suitor, Blazers pay $18M? (AP)
Former Trail Blazer Darius Miles is finding the road back to the NBA bumpier than usual. Just hours before the 6-foot-9 small forward cleared waivers Friday morning, Portland team president Larry Miller sent an e-mail to the other 29 NBA teams threatening litigation if a team takes Miles simply to adversely impact Portland's salary cap.
Iverson ho-hum about return to Denver (AP)
Allen Iverson isn't exactly emotional over his only trip this season to the Mile High City, certainly not like Chauncey Billups will be when he returns to the Motor City in two months. "It's just another game for me. I've been in the league 13 years," Iverson said of Friday night's game at the Pepsi Center between Detroit and Denver, who teamed up in November for the season's biggest trade.
Spurs win despite Duncan's poor night (AP)

It was an off night for Tim Duncan, but a good one for the San Antonio Spurs. Tony Parker scored 19 points and San Antonio beat the skidding Los Angeles Clippers 106-84 on Thursday, giving the Spurs their ninth win in the past 10 games despite getting only eight points from Duncan. The Clippers have lost nine straight.



Mavs top Knicks, ill Nowitzki held to 10 (AP)

With Dirk Nowitzki not feeling his best, Jason Kidd did something Thursday night that he prefers to leave to others. The pass-first point guard elected to shoot the basketball. Kidd made two big baskets in the fourth quarter, and the Dallas Mavericks overcame a subpar game from an ill Nowitzki to beat the New York Knicks 99-94.



Sprained ankle may sideline Jazz G Miles (AP)
Utah guard C.J. Miles was doubtful for Saturday's game against Detroit because of a sprained ankle. Miles twisted his right ankle when he landed on James Posey's foot after making a jump shot late in the third quarter of the Jazz's win over New Orleans on Wednesday night. Miles was re-evaluated Thursday and the sprain was rated moderate with minimal swelling, but he was still listed as doubtful for...
Hall of Famer Carril returns to Kings (AP)
Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril just can't stop teaching. The 78-year-old former Princeton coach rejoined the Sacramento Kings on Thursday as a consultant. Carril spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach with the Kings after retiring from his 30-year college coaching career, leaving the club in 2006 to spend more time at his home in New Jersey.
Blazers end Pistons' 7-game win streak (AP)

Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan was direct and simple with seconds to go against the Detroit Pistons. "Go to work," McMillan said, singling out Travis Outlaw during Portland's final timeout. Outlaw followed his coach's instructions, and hit a fadeaway jumper with 8.9 seconds left to give the Blazers an 84-83 victory over the Pistons on Wednesday night.



Pacers top Suns on Granger's 3 at buzzer (AP)

The Indiana Pacers are making a habit of beating the NBA's elite teams, and Danny Granger is making a habit of scoring big. Granger hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and matched his career high with 37 points in Indiana's 113-110 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.
