So how cool is that?! Buster Posey and Conor Gillapsie both park one a day after the draft. Okay I’m not going to anoint them with greatness, but hey the future is starting to look pretty damn promising. And then how can you not like the fact that Buster’s sister is already sporting a Giants cap! Sis has style. Here’s Buster’s blast. And here’s a clip of Conor’s home run.

At first glance of the San Francisco Giants day one picks, it really looks like they may have come away with a really solid group of players. I’m hoping Posey signs early so I can watch him up in Salem.

Bay City Ball gives a good rundown on the Giants day one picks.

obsessivegiantscompulsive sees only positives with the pick of Posey. Plus he takes a look the Giants farm system.

Not sure how many different directions the Giants could have gone with this pick, but it sure would have been sweet if we could have gotten a bigger bat. The talking heads seem to think it’s the right pick.

Here’s the MLB.com write-up on Buster Posey.

Focus Area Comments
Hitting Ability: Posey has advanced hitting skills, uses the big part of the field. He’s got a good approach and knowledge of the strike zone.

Power: He’s mostly gap-to-gap, but he shows occasional power to the pull side. He could develop into a 10-15 homer kind of guy.

Running Speed: He’s more athletic than most catchers, but he’s still a slightly below-average runner.

Base running: While he doesn’t have the foot speed to be a good runner, he does have decent instincts.

Arm Strength: He shows a decent arm in practice, but it doesn’t play as average in the game.

Fielding: Orginally a shortstop, he’s a little behind in things like shifting behind the plate.

Range: He does have quick footwork and should improve in this area the more he catches.

Physical Description: Posey is a little big in the hips and will have to work hard to maintain his lower half.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: He’s a highly sought-after package, a catcher who’ll be able to stay behind the plate and has a chance to hit.

Weaknesses: He’s got a lack of experience behind the plate. He just needs to catch more to learn the nuances of the position.

Summary: College catchers who can stay at the position and can hit are always a hot commodity and Posey will be no exception. He’s got a great approach with the bat and has a little power. As a converted shortstop, he’s still a little raw behind the plate, but all the tools are there for him to be just fine and help ensure he gets drafted fairly early.

Giants get solid effort from Jonathan Sanchez

Great pitching tonight from Jonathan Sanchez throwing seven innings of six-hit ball with eight strikeouts. Big props to Brian Horwitz hitting his first major league home run in the Giants six-run first inning. Now the Giants have to keep this up and give the same kind of support to Barry Zito and Matt Cain.

Don’t laugh, but if they can get those two on the winning track good things are going to happen for this bunch. You can see by watching the players in the dugout that they are really becoming a close knit group. Fun to watch.

Now all we have to do is grab us a couple of big bats in Thursday’s draft and keep building from within.
