San Francisco Giants, Game 23

There’s nothing better than a good old fashion pitchers duel. That’s just what Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum and Padres pitcher Chris Young served up Thursday night in a 1-0 San Francisco win. At 10-13 heading into the last weekend of April the Giants have to be feeling pretty good.

Giants @ Padres 24 April

San Francisco Giants 1, San Diego Padres 0

Great game tonight for the San Francisco Giants. Jonathan Sanchez and the bullpen came up big in shutting down the Padres.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Dan Ortmeier’s two-out double to the wall in center field scored pinch-runner Rajai Davis in the ninth inning to give the Giants a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres.Fred Lewis threw a runner out at the plate for San Francisco, which took the rubber match of the three-game set and beat the Padres for just the third time in the last 14 meetings. It was also the second straight walk-off win for the Giants, as Bengie Molina was the hero on Tuesday with a homer in the 11th inning of a 3-2 final.

Jonathan Sanchez struck out a career-best 10 over six-plus innings for the Giants, who picked up just their third win of the season. Sanchez gave up three hits and walked two.

Tyler Walker (1-0) struck out a pair in the ninth to get the victory.

Justin Germano surrendered four hits over seven innings for the Padres, but Heath Bell (0-1) was tagged with the loss thanks to Ortmeier’s clutch smash.

The Padres had just four hits.

Molina singled to right to start the bottom of the ninth and was replaced by Davis, who stole second. Lewis grounded out, and Jose Castillo lined out to a leaping Tadahito Iguchi at second base, keeping Davis at second. Ortmeier then drove a pitch to dead center and a backtracking Jim Edmonds failed to come up with the ball as it caromed off the fence on a hop. Ortmeier, in turn, was mobbed by his teammates before he got to third base.

Good defense and pitching ruled the night at AT&T Park, with each team being denied rallies on several occasions. But the big moment in the field for the Giants came in the seventh. Edmonds and Khalil Greene singled to start the inning before Merkin Valdez replaced Sanchez on the mound.

Scott Hairston’s bunt advanced the runners to second and third, and Josh Bard then lofted a fly ball into foul territory down the left-field line. Lewis made a backhand grab and fired to home plate, and the ball somehow bounced on an angle past Edmonds, who was tagged out by a stretching Molina.

The Padres had runners at second and third with nobody out in the fifth, but Bard and Germano fanned before Brian Giles flied out to end the inning.

Giles ran down a fly ball from Randy Winn to end the eighth inning, taking away an extra-base hit and likely the go-ahead run with Aaron Rowand on first following his two-out hit.

Game Notes

The Padres head to Los Angeles for a three-game series this weekend, while the Giants host St. Louis in a four-game set, starting Thursday…Five of the first nine games for the Giants have been decided by a run…Rich Aurilia had two hits for the Giants and has 1,091 in a San Francisco uniform, needing one more to tie Matt Williams for ninth place on the team’s all-time list.

San Francisco Giants 3, San Diego Padres 2

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Bengie Molina hit a pair of homers, including the winning solo blast off Cla Meredith with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, to boost the Giants to a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Randy Winn had two hits and an RBI for San Francisco, which avoided matching its worst start since moving to the Bay Area from New York over 50 years ago.

Tim Lincecum gave up seven hits and a run while striking out seven over six innings in the start for the Giants, who snapped a four-game skid to move to 2-6 on the season.

Brad Hennessey (1-0) fanned three batters over the final two innings to get the victory.

Brian Giles singled four times and knocked in a run for the Padres. San Diego, which recorded 13 hits — all singles — has dropped two of its last three games.

Randy Wolf was charged with five hits and two runs over the first six innings for the Padres, who lost for just the second time in the last 13 games to the Giants.

The Padres tied the game in the ninth inning off Brian Wilson. Josh Bard walked and pinch-hitter Tony Clark had a hit down the left-field line before Brian Giles lifted a sacrifice fly to left.

Eugenio Velez singled to start the bottom of the 10th, but was later thrown out at third base on a ground ball from Winn, which turned into a double play.

The Padres wasted a one-out Giles single in the 11th, and after Meredith (0-1) fanned Aaron Rowand to start the bottom of the frame, Molina clubbed a 1-2 offering over the wall in left field.

“It wasn’t an absolutely bad pitch, I just picked a bad time to let a slider fall out on me,” Meredith said. “It looks like he had made up his mind to swing at anything close.”

It was Molina’s first career extra-inning homer and fifth walk-off blast of his career.

“It was pretty amazing to see those guys waiting for me at home,” Molina said. “When I got to first base I just wanted to turn around and come back.”

Molina led off the bottom of the second with a homer to left and Winn doubled in Brian Bocock in the third for a 2-0 advantage.

San Diego loaded the bases in the sixth and scored once, but missed a chance on more runs. Khalil Greene sent a fly ball to left and it glanced off the glove of a back-tracking Dan Ortmeier near the wall. However, the runners got crossed up thinking that Ortmeier would catch the ball, and the Padres were left with runners at first and second with one out. Scott Hairston then fanned and Bard flied out.

Game Notes

The Padres placed catcher Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a strained ligament in his right elbow, while the Giants put outfielder Dave Roberts on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his left knee…Hairston was ejected in the eighth inning after arguing a third strike on a checked swing.
