Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte

November 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am

Q&A in Sporting News Today is with Bears RB Matt Forte. Front page story is a look at the Heisman race. Make sure you check out the Back Page…yeah that’s Holyfield staring down 7-foot Russian and WBA champion Nikolai Valuev…

Matt Forte and his “Welcome to the NFL moment”…

I guess you could say I did. I pretty much expected it to be a whole lot tougher. But there was a moment in the first game: I was held up in the pile, and Bob Sanders came out of nowhere and drilled me in the shoulder. I had to go out for a few plays after that one.

Dustin Pedroia wins AL MVP

November 18th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Have to say up to this point in the awards season the writers are hitting it out of the park. Great choice.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was named the 2008 Most Valuable Player in the American League this afternoon. Minnesota’s Justin Morneau was second, and Pedroia’s teammate, Kevin Youkilis, finished third.

Fantasy Basketball Resources

October 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm

So over at Mock Draft Central they did their 2008 Fantasy Basketball Expert Mock Draft last week. I always have fun tracking and comparing these drafts with my rankings and the rankings from other site’s I use. Plus I’m in the middle of a 12 team H2H draft right now so all the help I can find is always a good thing.

With less than a week to go before the start of the NBA season (just checked the countdown clock at NBA.com…5 days:9hours and some change) there are still a lot of drafts happening. One of my favorite quotes is from Samuel Johnson, “Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.”

The problem nowadays with playing fantasy sports is the amount of information that is available. Having to sift through it all is admittedly fun, but it can be time consuming. Over at Give Me The Rock, Patrick has taken all the leg work out for you with the GMTR Fantasy Basketball Buffet 2008. If your waiting on your draft or in the middle of one it’s well worth the time and effort to check out the resources listed.

Here’s a couple of other resources that will come in handy before, during and after you draft. The first is a pdf download from The Score. I’ve been downloading their guides for quite awhile and they are great for in-season reference as well as draft prep. The player profiles are a great tool.

Welcome to The Score Sports Forecaster - Online Fantasy Basketball Draft Kit 2008 edition. This special online edition is free to our readers, previewing the 2008 basketball season.

The online edition (In Acrobat 6.0 PDF) contains more than 42 pages of all the features you’ve come to rely on: our massive Cheat Sheets, position-by-position rankings and forecasts, team-by-team reports, comprehensive statistical information from 2007 and projected into 2008, all done in a printer-friendly format!

The Score Sports Forecaster - Get the Edge!

THE SPORTS FORECASTER BASKETBALL 2008-09

The next one is DrFantasyBasketball.com. This is my first year using them so I’m not sure how it will play out. Pretty clean site, and the draft kit has everything from player rankings, profiles, position tiers, and projections to cheat sheets. Looking forward to seeing how they do this season.

TAMPA BAY RAYS WORKOUT DAY NOTES

October 21st, 2008 at 8:44 am

TAMPA BAY IS ATTEMPTING TO BECOME… just the 5th market to win a Stanley Cup, World Series and Super Bowl – joining Boston, New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Rays become the second team in MLB history and just the 5th team in the four major sports to advance to its league’s championship series the year after having the worst record in the league…none have gone on to win the league championship…those that have done it:
o 1991 Braves won the NL pennant and lost to the Minnesota Twins in the World Series the year after going 65-97.
o 1958-59 Minneapolis Lakers lost to the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals the year after going 19-53.
o 1949-50 New York Rangers lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals the year after going 18-31-11.
o 1958-59 Toronto Maple Leafs lost to Montreal in the Stanley Cup Finals the year after going 21-38-11.

DAVID PRICE— The 23-year-old top overall pick in 2007 out of Vanderbilt University earned his first major league win in Game 2 of the ALCS and got the final four outs for his first big league save Sunday in Game 7.
…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the 3rd rookie pitcher to record a win and a save in the same postseason series, joining the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright (2006 World Series) and the Reds’ Rawly Eastwick (1975 NLCS, 1975 World Series).
…he is the 18th player to earn a save in a postseason game in which he entered a bases-loaded situation, but the first rookie.
…he became the 4th pitcher all-time to earn his first major league win in the postseason, joining STL Josh Kinney at NY (2006), ANA Francisco Rodriguez at NY (2002) and ATL Odalis Perez vs. CHC (1998).
…he is also the 9th pitcher to get his first save in the postseason.
…he made his ML debut on Sep 14 at Yankee Stadium and pitched in 5 regular season games (1 start).

2008 ALCS MVP: MATT GARZA—Garza went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA (13.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 14 SO) in the ALCS.
…he won Games 3 and 7 for the Rays.
…this marks the 11th time (10th pitcher) that a pitcher has won ALCS MVP honors.
…at 24, Garza is the youngest pitcher ever to win ALCS MVP honors, surpassing Mike Boddicker of the 1983 Baltimore Orioles.
…with a win Game 7, the 24-year-old Garza became the sixth pitcher (seventh time) under the age of 25 in ALCS history to earn the win in the ALCS-clinching game, joining Hall of Famer Jim Palmer (23 in 1969 ALCS, 24 in 1970 ALCS), Dave Righetti (22 in 1981 ALCS), Roger Clemens (24 in 1986 ALCS), Andy Pettitte (24 in 1996 ALCS) and Francisco Rodriguez (20 in 2002 ALCS).
…a product of Fresno State and 2005 first round pick by the Twins, Garza was acquired along with SS Jason Bartlett on 11/28/07 as part of the trade that sent OF Delmon Young to Minnesota.

B.J. AND LONGO!—Upton and Longoria have combined to hit 13 home runs this postseason, second-most by a duo in major league history.
…the 8 home runs combined between the two in the ALCS represent the most by any duo in a single series in postseason play.
(Elias Sports Bureau).

COMBINED HR’S PLAYERS TEAM YEAR
14 Rich Aurilia & Barry Bonds San Francisco Giants 2002
13 Evan Longoria & B.J. Upton Tampa Bay Rays 2008
12 Albert Pujols & Larry Walker St. Louis Cardinals 2004
*Source: David Vincent, SABR

MORE B.J. AND LONGO
Upton has 15 RBI this postseason, four shy of the ML record 19, held by David Ortiz in 2004 with Boston, Sandy Alomar in 1997 with Cleveland and Scott Spiezio in 2002 with Anaheim.
…his 11 RBI in the ALCS tied an LCS record (Ortiz-2004).

Longoria’s 8 RBI in the ALCS tied Cincinnati’s Pat Duncan (1919) for most RBI by a rookie in a single postseason.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Here we go! Tampa Bay Rays taking on the Philadelphia Phillies in the 104th edition of the Fall Classic. Congrats to all you Tampa Bay and Phillies fans. While the network bigwigs are probably crying over the missed opportunity of a say Boston vs. Los Angeles Series, I think this one is going to be fun to watch. If your a baseball fan you have to appreciate what the Rays and Phillies accomplished this season.

Taking a look back to March when John Schlegel from MLB.com posted his MLB.com’s predictions for ‘08 season along with some from the more mainstream publications. Won’t find any Tampa Bay picks here and kudos to Lindy’s for picking the Phillies to make the Series.

ESPN.com NFL Power Rankings

So with the Browns 35-14 ass whipping of the Giants last night, I'm wondering what the shake-up will be with the ESPN.com power rankings. I don't put much stock in these kind of polls, but they are fun to read when the time allows.

Hanging 44 on the Seahawks without Plaxico Burress was a strong statement. It will take more than the Browns to knock this team off course. (MM)

Do the Titans move to the top of the pile?
