Mock Drafts and Jonathan Stewart

January 29th, 2008 at 12:10 am

Wondering where the Mock Draft community thinks Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart will be drafted? Oregon fans know what kind of talent Stewart is, so a few week’s ago I started tracking a handful of mock drafts to see what others thought about him. All the sites agree he’s a first round talent and can have an immediate impact wherever he goes.

For those of you that don’t follow mock drafts know that it is a huge deal for a lot of folks. You’ll see arguments that it seems senseless to try and figure out who and when a team will draft a player. But it truly has become a part of the NFL season. Now that the All-Star games are almost over draft boards will hold for awhile leading up to the NFL Combine (February 20 - 26), then that’s when things get fun. Players will be making money or losing money during that week.

If you play fantasy football chances are you’ve already started ranking this year’s running back class and trying to figure out who the 2008 version of Adrian Peterson will be. Remember that since the 1993 season there has been at least one rookie running back rush for over a 1,000 yards.

Most of the site’s I track I’ve been following for a long time now and enjoy what they have to say. Take a look at The Huddle Report and the TOP 100 BOARD AND MOCK DRAFT SCORES and you’ll see that most of them do pretty well.

Trail Blazers Midseason Report Card

January 27th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Time for the Blazers Midseason Report Card from Houston at The Inferno.

This team has been enjoyable to watch all season long. Even at the beginning of the season you could see the team had some ballplayers and with some good fortune would get their share of wins . I didn’t expect them to reach mid-season with us thinking that making the playoffs is a very realistic goal. Gotta agree with Houston when he says:

They’re doing it the right way, unlike most teams the future doesn’t present deadlines that titles must be won by before the current core ages past prime, and for a kind of humble, small city like Portland this group of kids really is a perfect fit - for each other and for most of us fans.

Monster Mile Rocks!

January 26th, 2008 at 9:03 am

One monster of a structure
DOVER, Del. — He’s been portrayed as an intimidating, car crushing creature who wreaks havoc on NASCAR’s most skilled competitors. He’s been molded into the winner’s trophy, playfully mimicked by victorious drivers, featured in a comic book, and posed as an action figure. In 2008, Miles the Monster will become the largest attraction at a NASCAR track and will be one of the tallest fiberglass structures in the world. The Monster Monument will stand 46-feet-tall amongst race fans in the newly created Victory Plaza at Dover International Speedway.

The Monster Monument at Victory Plaza will be completed prior to the May 30 – June 1, 2008 race weekend and will become a new focal point for race fans visiting the Monster Mile. Nearly five stories tall, the structure depicts the monster bursting out of the concrete ground, carrying with him a full-scale stock car in his right hand that will hover high over race fans below. Glowing red eyes and a menacing grin will make the monster a “must see” for race fans visiting the Monster Mile in June, September, and all year round. Motorists on Route 1, the major highway behind the Speedway, will also be able to see the Monster Monument’s bright red eyes when commuting past the track.

UCLA Bruins 80, Oregon Ducks 75

January 24th, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Kevin Love scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked UCLA past Oregon, 80-75, at McArthur Court.

Darren Collison had a career-high 22 points for the Bruins (17-2, 5-1 Pac-10), who bounced back from a 72-63 loss to USC to win their 10th game in the last 11 contests. Russell Westbrook contributed 15 points for UCLA, which will play at Oregon State on January 26.

Malik Hairston poured in 18 points for the Ducks (12-7, 3-4), who have dropped three contests in a row. Bryce Taylor and Maarty Leunen scored 16 points apiece for Oregon, which will host USC on January 26.

The teams matched buckets for the next few minutes and a Westbrook three brought UCLA within two points, 69-67, with just over four minutes on the clock.

After two Leunen foul shots made it a four-point game, Dragovic drained a three to ignite a 7-0 UCLA run that gave the Bruins a 74-71 lead with 1:04 on the clock.

On the next Oregon possession, Tajuan Porter bricked a trey off the back of the rim and eventually Love was fouled. He hit 1-of-2 from the line to give UCLA a 75-71 lead with 48 ticks on the clock.

Their next time up the court, Porter and Hairston missed jumpers for Oregon and Westbrook grabbed the latter’s rebound, he was fouled and made 1-of-2 for the 76-71 lead.

Oregon was forced to foul and were unable to string any points together, as UCLA earned the victory.

Porter had 13 points and six assists in defeat.

Both schools battled back and forth during the early stages of the first half. Three straight Collison buckets put UCLA up 18-15 just prior to the midway point of the half.

The lead see-sawed until Love hit a three and Collison connected on two free throws to put the Bruins up 36-30 just beyond the three-minute mark.

After exchanging baskets for the next two minutes, Leunen sunk a jumper to cut the Ducks’ deficit to 40-36 heading into the locker room.

A Hairston layup, followed by a Porter three-pointer, gave Oregon a 41-40 lead barely 30 seconds into the new half.

Moments later, after the Bruins took a one-point lead on a Collison jump shot, Porter sparked a 12-4 Ducks run that Leunen capped with a layup just past the 11-minute mark of the second half. The surge gave Oregon a 58-51 advantage.

UCLA responded with a 9-3 spurt that Collison closed out with two jump shots to pull the Bruins within one point with just under eight minutes left on the clock.

Game Notes

Oregon’s Joevan Catron had 10 points…UCLA outrebounded Oregon 36-24…UCLA hit 42.9 percent from three-point range, while Oregon hit 36.8 percent from behind the arc.
